Craft items for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

After being postponed from last year due to Covid-19, the Olympic Games are well underway in Tokyo, Japan, right now. If your children or grandchildren have been obsessed with the sports, watching all their favourite athletes, and are cheering them on from home, here are a few simple crafts that you can do to keep the spirit alive, and keep that torch burning!

Medal Cookies

This is a fun and easy way to keep kids entertained, and then have them earn a fun and tasty snack in the process! All you need is some ribbon, some sweets (like Smarties), and some homemade or store-bought cookie dough. It’s an easy way to pass an afternoon, and your kids will be so proud of their homemade medals once they are finished!

Olympic Torch Collage

For children who love cutting and sticking, this is the activity for them! All you need is glue, scissors, and some colourful paper (magazines and newspapers will also be good for this, it’s just harder to find the colours you need). Collages are a brilliant form of art therapy, and are a good way for some children, who find being creative difficult, to get involved. It is judgement-free and super fun – it’s just a little bit messy!

Nature Olympic Rings

If you have children who love to be outside, another good Olympic craft is to make the Olympic rings out of things that can be found outside. Leaves, shells, stones, you name it; if you can find it, you can use it. This is a lovely way to encourage your children to spend some time outside, especially during the summer, and will help to make some lovely memories.

Lego Stadium

Lego is a toy beloved by many children, and its versatility is one of the best things about it. For an activity to do on a rainy or colder summer day, have a go at building your own Olympic stadium. They can pick their favourite sport, and then have a go at creating their own version of the stadium! It’s a creative way to introduce children to physical art and will have them being building pros in no time!

Laurel Leaf Felt Headband

Our last Olympic crafts suggestion is a laurel leaf headband made from felt. Worn by the winners at the Olympics when they first started, this is a good way to get your kids interested in history whilst having them do something fun. Sometimes, history can be daunting to explain to children, so this is an easy segue into the topic. Just grab an elastic headband, some felt and scissors, and a hot glue gun, and you’ll have a gorgeous headpiece in no time. Plus, they’ll have a new accessory they can add to their dressing up box once they’re done!
