How to Make Your Own Candles

Candles are one of the best ways to make your home feel cosy in the run-up to autumn and winter. While candles add warmth and light to your space, they can be a bit pricey if you’re buying them all the time. Making them yourself not only saves you money, but you get to decide what goes into them: sensitive to fragrance? Don’t put it in. Concerned about how clean the air is in your house? Use soy wax. By making your own candles, you take control over what goes into your house, and what you breathe in, too!

What You’ll Need:

  • Pot
  • Stove
  • Wax
  • Wick
  • Container for your candle
  • Fragrance (optional)
  • Colour (optional)
  • Skewers or ice lolly sticks

Place the Wick

Before you place your wick, make sure you have the right container picked out. Old jars or candle containers are good options, but old glasses can also work! Reusing an old container is both cost-effective and better for the environment. Place your wick into your vessel, and make sure it is hanging out of the side of the container.

Heat the Wax

Grab your pot, preferably one that you don’t mind throwing away or only using for candles, because it might get a bit fiddly trying to clean it and put it on the stove. Add your wax and heat it until it’s fully melted. If you want to, you can add your colour and fragrance to the melted wax whilst it is still in the pot. You can buy fragrance oils online and there are some really cool scents to try!

Transfer the Wax

Carefully pour the hot wax into the container. Use the skewers or lolly sticks to keep the wick in place. Let the wax cool down completely, and then trim the wick down to size.

There you have it! Your very own candles ready to dot around your home. Creativity never smelled so good!
